Mastering English through Writing
Every student has different and unique experiences in learning English. Each type of learning is one of the factors that can affect the learning process of the students. There are students who can learn only by listening to the lecturer, there are students who need to listen while seeing and doing the practice, and some others need to write what they have learned to construct the knowledge. Therefore, the writer who have experienced in learning English through writing, is going to discuss about the experience of learning English from elementary school, junior and senior high school, until in the college level.

The very first writer’s experience in learning English was in elementary school. At that time, the writer was in the 6th grade when the writer found an English book on the shelf of school library. English was so ‘strange’ and ‘new’ among the students in SDN 10 Sidodadi; the place where the writer studied. No one shows their interest on it. However, that was the way the writer started the experiences to learn English. Through that book and one other dictionary, writer liked to learn English. The writer started by writing every single new word and made sentences.  Through this way, the writer really learned English confidently and independently.

Come to the next level of education, junior and senior high school. English was not something strange anymore. Since English is one of the obligate lesson in school. In this level, writer learned English by making a diary book called “Primbon Book”. It’s not primarily a diary book, but a collection of English lesson. For instance, writer was learned about sentence perfect tense, then, the writer wrote every single thing related to this topic, completed with the example. This primbon book which was proposed by the writer’s English teacher was so helpful.

The next level is college level, when the writer learned grammar properly. The lessons ‘sentence structure’ and ‘writing’ was very helpful in the first semester that the writer had been passed. Sentence structure and writing became two perfect combinations. While structure class taught the writer to be ‘in the path’ with grammar rules, writing class was the place to practice. Writer learned a higher level of English through writing in the college level, better than the previous in the high school.

In short, the writer had been passed 3 general steps of learning English through writing. These three level of learning; elementary school, high school, and college level, taught the writer to have better English and the proper use of English. Whatever the way of learning. Confident and persistent are needed to be successful in learning English. Mastering English through writing is one of necessary way to do.
