The Use of Television

The world comes to a modern era in line with the development of technology. New inventions created to fulfill humans’ needs. Televisions take its role in this technology era; it is invented to fulfill the need of information. Based on a research; from all over the world, 12 million people a day, watch TV.  However, people not only find the good sides of television, but also the bad sides. In line with what had been stated by Steve Jobs “I think it's brought the world a lot closer together and will continue to do that. There are downsides to everything; there are unintended consequences to everything. The most corrosive piece of technology that I've ever seen is called television, but then, again, television, at its best, is magnificent.”¹ These following paragraphs will be discussed about two positive sides and two negative sides of television.

 The positive sides of the television; which of course in line with the purpose of its invention; it is informative, cheap, entertain, etc. People must be agreed that televisions are informative enough to be placed as mass media. Television with its thousands of channels and programs provides the newest, hottest, and the most favorite issues or information. Besides that, it has a friendly cost to de bought, it’s cheap. Imagine how much money people spend to get information from internet, magazine, and newspaper. Compare to the cost of television which only Rp. 1.000.000-, with a low price of electricity. These positive sides of televisions are reasonable enough to keep using television as the sources of information.

Come to the negative sides of television, which caused a very great problem. The first negative side of television is the influence of its ‘inappropriate’ programs toward someone’s personality. Sometimes, it’s lake of sensor control; people still watch about violence, pornography, etc. The second point; it’s caused people become passive. It is happened because people who like watching television are accustomed with visual aid with one interaction. No feedback from the watchers. Well, these two negative sides of television are quite imperative to be considered as a problem.

For sum up, even a technology comes from a very good invention process and invented for the good, it still has the bad side for the users. Recognized the bad side, and avoid. use the good side, and be thankful. Use the good side of television wisely and avoid the bad side by controlling yourself and your family activities toward television.
